iPhone Pricing in New Zealand

With the new iPhone 3Gs being released shortly, I am again thinking of getting one. The camera has been improved, the capacity increased and it is now a lot faster (2x apparently).

The problem is that with Vodafone, you only get 3G in the main cities in New Zealand as the iPhone doesn’t support 3G on 900mhz.

However, Telecom XT has a nationwide 3G network on 850mhz which the iPhone does support but Telecom haven’t announced they will be selling it yet. Therefore you need to get one from Vodafone and port it over to Telecom XT. Without a phone subsidy the total cost over the contact is a lot more. See:

Cost wise, Vodafone obviously wins due to the phone subsidy. However, without full 3G support nationwide, is it enough to have 3G only in the city (I probably spend 95% of my time in the city)?

Hopefully Telecom will get the iPhone as its contact is a lot better.

I will update once the 3Gs prices are released.

* the prices are based on the current iPhone 3G 16g at Vodafone, not the iPhone 3Gs. It would be cheaper to get a parallel import one to use on Telecom since Vodafone probably wont support the warranty if you use it on Telecom.

This day in 2007:

We got up to see the Gorillas today. The weather cleared for us and luckily the Gorillas were in a clearing so I managed to get some good shots (it was very glary so it was hard to meter the shots right with their black hair). The group we saw had a Silverback, 4 large females each with babies, the youngest being just 3 weeks old.

TDI07: The road to Rwanda

This day in 2007:

Uganda, Africa: We set off in vans on our way to Rwanda, passing right by where the Congo, Uganda and Rwanda intersect. What is amazing about the photo of the kids above is not the photo but their attitude. What you cant see is these kids are refuges from the Congo living in a UN tent camp. What is sad about it is that one year later and the Congo still has refugees. The two photos below are the country side just before the Rwanda boarder and a girl selling Bananas. This day in 2007:

Uganda, Africa: From Entebbe, we drove to Lake Victoria and caught a boat across the lake (and the equator) to Ngamba Island, a refuge for Chimps. They still have to feed them as the forest on the Island is only enough to support 1 chimp full time, but all the chimps have been rescued so it is a better life from what they would other wise have had. This the old guy of the group, if you couldn’t tell from the grey hair.

The bird below is the Ugandan Crown Crane, their national bird and the little monkey is from the zoo on the shore of lake Victoria where we caught the boat from. Click through for more photos of Africa or Uganda.

Uganda, Africa: We pulled at a road side market and our truck was swarmed by people trying to sell us Chicken and beef on skewers. It was straight from the grill, cheap and tasty. Uganda, Africa: After Lake Baringo, we crossed the boarder into Uganda. Through the countryside we passed many locals. They were extremely friendly. Some we passed quickly in truck, some we stopped and tried to talk too. The last photo is the truck we travelled on – while we enjoyed our trip immensely, there is NO way we could recommend the company At this stage all I will say is NEVER travel with Overland Club. Lake Baringo, Kenya, Africa: Africa isn't just about wild animals so it was another early morning to go bird watching by boat on Lake Baringo. The combination of low light, a long lens and a rocking boat meant there were a few blurry photos. The photo of the Fishing Eagle is a sequence, though 5 shoots per second and 1/800 exposure were quite fast enough (full sequence on Flickr). Click through for more photos of Africa or Kenya.

Playa Maria, Cuba: OUr failed attempt to go to Santiago enables us to spend a day at Playa Maria ( a day trip from Vinales) for wome lounging on an amazing beach. This was a resort in the middle of nowhere which appear to have only a handful of guests, all of which seemed to be solely for diving. And I know why. I did two dives and they were fantastic.

Playa Acone, Cuba: After some time in Trinidad, we headed out to Playa Acone, a little beach resort which was almost deserted. It was the idyllic Caribbean beach. Below is the view from our hotel room - it doesn't get much better than that.

I also managed to get a couple of dives in just off the coast on the reefs.

As we Drunk our Cuba Libra (rum and coke) of the back garden, you could image the Al Capone and the rest of the mafia drink along side.

Habana, Cuba: We finally arrived in Habana, but not without further issues. OUr flight from Amsterdam to Cuba was via Paris and we had to run so that we didn't miss another flight. Then we left the lonely planet guide on the plane so arrived in a spanish speaking country with no bookings or travel plans(except the first 2 days) in a country that doesn't really have a tourist industry, except the resorts which we didn't want to do. We eventially bought a Guide of travellers departing to the airport so we we free to do as we pleased. The picture above is of Cubas favourite revolutionary, Che, on the Ministry of defense building and the photo below is the guard of Lennons glasses (re puts them on the statutes only when a tourist bus turns up so no one can steal them).

Urfa, Turkey: It took us to the end of our trip to find the real Turkey. The city of Urfa was untouched by tourists and was full of traditional custom and tradition. While everywhere we went was traditional (we were their during Ramadan and every town had a Turkish bath and a barber on every corner), it didn't seem real until we got here. We appeared to be the only white people there and the locals where genuinely interested to see us, as we were to see them.

Anyway, this is the latest picture I uploaded taken from my trip to Egypt - taken at Dahab looking over the Red Sea with Saudi in the distance (I assume). The original had a lot of noise in it so I wrote it of but managed to recover it in Lightroom.

This famous bridge in Mostar is a UNESCO world heritage site. It didn’t always look like this. It was destroyed in war.

"Dont forget" refers to the war that not only destroyed this bridge (now restored with the help of UNESCO) but also ripped apart Yugoslavia and the lives of many people.
As with all wars, so much could have been done to stop it ...

SLR purists must be turning over in there grave (unless they are still alive of course). First DSLR get live view (thats what the view finder is for), now it gets video!

If I was to be choosing a new camera out of the Canon 50D or the Nikon D90, I am not sure which one I would choose (larger sensor v video). However, since I already have Canon Lens, I will stick with this system. By the time I upgrade, Canon will probably offer video as well.

Microsoft launch's Photosynth

Microsoft launched Photsynth last week and it seems to be getting a bit of applause from the tech fanboys. It is actually very clever. You upload a bunch of photos from different angles of the same scene and it creates a 3D navigable image. This is very early technology but you can see in the future, this could be very powerful (imagine all the images of Flickr, meshed together!!)

It could also be used to explore smaller objects in great detail:

Unfortunately you need to install software (windows only) to make it work, but it is worth it to see the future.

I haven’t made one myself yet but I am looking forward to it.

Canon to release new 50D?

News broke on the Internet that Canon China put the specs of the new 50D up on their website for a brief period. Some one spotted it and the specs have been leaked.

When the story first broke, people though it had in body IS which would have been a giveaway that it was fake (Canon makes great IS lens and have said they wont do in body). Apparently people just misread the Chinese – it actually said it works well with in lens IS.

The specs are as follows:

I don’t think it justifies a body upgrade for me (I am using a 20D) – I can justify the money at the moment. For me 8mp is more than enough and the rest is incremental improvements. A better autofocus and less noise at higher ISO would be the main reason for me to upgrade.

People are also expect the full frame 5D to be upgraded. It will be interesting to see what the specs on that camera are.

The Annual Boobs on bikes parade in Auckland was held today (to promote the Exotic expo). After protests by the council, the courts rules that boobs were not offensive, or illegal, so it was allowed to go ahead. But not before a protests:

Our visit to Lillehammer (site of the 94 winter Olympic) saw us at the top of the ski jump for the views. The weather restricted that but we did see some people practicing - amazing to watch from just meters away - the speed made it very difficult to catch.

Then we decided to get in on the action at the toboggan .
