TDI07: The road to Rwanda

This day in 2007:

Uganda, Africa: We set off in vans on our way to Rwanda, passing right by where the Congo, Uganda and Rwanda intersect.  What is amazing about the photo of the kids above is not the photo but their attitude.  What you cant see is these kids are refuges from the Congo living in a UN tent camp.  What is sad about it is that one year later and the Congo still has refugees. The two photos below are the country side just before the Rwanda boarder and a girl selling Bananas.  She was their two days in a row with wonderful smile. TDI07: Candy, the international language

This day in 2007:

Uganda, Africa: A lollipop makes every kid smile.  And below, a Ugandan sunrise, unfortunately we were on the truck travelling to out next destination. Click through for more photos of Africa or Uganda.

 

TDI07: Chimp Island

This day in 2007:

Uganda, Africa: From Entebbe, we drove to Lake Victoria and caught a boat across the lake (and the equator) to Ngamba Island, a refuge for Chimps.  They still have to feed them as the forest on the Island is only enough to support 1 chimp full time, but all the chimps have been rescued so it is a better life from what they would other wise have had.  This the old guy of the group, if you couldn’t tell from the grey hair.

 

The bird below is the Ugandan Crown Crane, their national bird and the little monkey is from the zoo on the shore of lake Victoria where we caught the boat from. Click through for more photos of Africa or Uganda.

 

TDI07: African drive through fast food

This day in 2007:

Uganda, Africa: We pulled at a road side market and our truck was swarmed by people trying to sell us Chicken and beef on skewers.  It was straight from the grill, cheap and tasty.  The whole time we were there, there was a constant flow of trucks and busses stopping on their way through for food. TDI07: The people of Uganda

This day in 2007:

Uganda, Africa: After Lake Baringo, we crossed the boarder into Uganda. Through the countryside we passed many locals.  They were extremely friendly.  Some we passed quickly in truck, some we stopped and tried to talk too.  The last photo is the truck we travelled on – while we enjoyed our trip immensely, there is NO way we could recommend the company  At this stage all I will say is NEVER travel with Overland Club. TDI07: Birds

This day in 2007:

Lake Baringo, Kenya, Africa: Africa isn't just about wild animals so it was another early morning to go bird watching by boat on Lake Baringo. The combination of low light, a long lens and a rocking boat meant there were a few blurry photos. The photo of the Fishing Eagle is a sequence, though 5 shoots per second and 1/800 exposure were quite fast enough (full sequence on Flickr). TDI07: AFRICA!

This day in 2007:

Lake Naivasha, Kenya, Africa: We finally made it to Africa and on our home stretch back home. After leaving Nairobi, we camped at Lake Naivasha and when for a game walk in the early morning. TDI07: A new lens

This day in 2007:

My new “Africa” Lens arrived.  The EF 100-400L (the big white one) side by side with my existing EF 70-300 lens. 

It is twice the size, twice the weight, more than twice the cost and for Africa, more than twice as valuable.

The lens was invaluable for getting good upclose shots of animals.  The shots I got cant even be compared to those who only had a standard 3x zoom.  At times I wished it was smaller and lighter but I was always glad I had it.

I am not sure what to do with it now.  It seems like a bit of overkill so I might consider replacing it with a 70-200L lens??

Rafting the Zambezi

When we were at Victoria Falls, a group of us from our tour rafted the Zambezi, a 30km streach of river with, from memory, four grade 5 rapids and a handful of grade 4 rapids - over 20 rapids in total.

Obvouisly as I was on the raft, I couldn't take photos but the good folks at Saf Par got one of their Kayakers to take photos which I bought. A few of the guys who did the rafting with me have been asking for the photos so I have put them on line. Click on the photo to view (thats me in the blue holding on for dear life and taking a huge gasp of air):



The tag for that photo set is Africa so other shots of africa will end up in there as I get around to uploadig them. For the moment it is just the rafting photos and a random photo of the red pyramid in Egypt.
